"Whitefeather"
Donations Needed for 3rd surgery! Please help!
12/12/2004 Update
11/3/2004 Whitefeather was
transported from the local impound shelter to a local vet. He was
severly depressed and in pain. He could barely lift his head. After an
exam it was determined that he had 2 Ulna fractures and an elbow out
of place. He had multiple scrapes and small open wounds.
11/4/2004 Whitefeather patiently
awaits surgery while being treated with antibiotics for infection. He
is splinted and resting.
11/8/2004 Whitefeather had pins
put in both front legs. This required bone surgery so the estimate for
surgery only was over $800 on the high end. Whitefeather went to his
foster home. Several days later the elbow needed to be put back in
place again. A second surgery was required. Several screws were put in
place and some wire.
11/10/2004 Whitefeather
arrives back at his foster home with his new bandages.
12/5/2004 One month after his
surgery and after 2 follow up exams Whitefeather had one bandage
removed and is in happy spirits able to use his front legs but must
still be kept crated most of the time so he can heal. A potential
adopter comes to meet Whitefeather. He is one of the most amazing dogs
I have ever met. He has had such a sweet and patient temperament
through all he has been through. He is loving and intelligent. He has
a magnetic personality. He smiles and gives a lot of kisses and he
always rolls over for some belly scratches. What a doll!
12/10/2004 Whitefeather returns
for a follow visit with the vet. He is x-rayed and there is a problem.
The Ulna fractures are not mending. Despite his great attitude and
happy face there is a problem. The vet informs me that Whitefeather
must have a 3rd surgery. He stays the night at the vet while we ponder
what to do. Myself, the adopter and the foster mom decided that it was
time to get him to an orthopedic specialist ASAP. He has had the best
care possible up to this point and his elbow looks good but the
fractures are becoming a major concern.
12/11/2004 (8am) After
several phone calls between us all we decided to take Whitefeather to
Dr. Jackson a specialist at The Veterinary
Specialty Hospital of San Diego.
His appointment
was at noon and it is a good 2 hour drive. He also
needed a referral called in and to be picked up along with his X-rays.
Animal Hospital at the Narrows promptly prepared him and had all of
his x-rays ready to go and they kindly called in the referral right
away. Everyone there had fallen in love with his determination and
loving personality.
Estimate for Surgery to help Whitefeather is $4375.58 - $5244.29 This is on
top of his bill from the first vet clinic. I know that some people
may think it is unjustifiable when so many pets need saving but our
philosophy is that EVERY pet is valuable. Treating a pet as anything
but valuable is just condoning the throw away attitude of the world
we live in. Whitefeather is the product of a throw away society that
is flooded with a huge overpopulation problem. It's not his fault
and he deserves to be cared for. He has been lucky enough to find
his way into the hands of people that want to help him and we are
not going to turn away from him now. He loves life, and people!! So
many people have been touched by his story and his face and have
helped us chip away at his first vet bill. We are so
appreciative and we still need major HELP! If you know of any
organizations that can help us pleasesend us
the information and if you can afford even $5 or $10 please consider
donating what you can. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!
Snail mail donations payable to Local
Rescue are accepted. We will also accept checks made out to Veterinary
Specialty Hospital :
12/11/2004 (12pm) Gina meets the potential adopter at the The
Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego. Whitefeather is a good
passenger and stared at me the whole way with that big silly cone on
his head. He was also sporting a GIANT smile as usual! After a potty
break it was in to see
Dr. Jackson. He looked at the X-rays and said WF was probably hit
by a car and that he had some nasty breaks. He could see the elbow was
looking good but he could also see that the fractures were not
mending. He checked his elbows for range of motion and did some other
evaluating and came to the conclusion that WF would need plates in
both legs and a bone graph from his shoulders. The surgery would take
about 4 hours. But he was optimistic and has seen worse. The potential
adopter explained that she was not concerned about him doing agility
or anything like that. She only wants for him to have a good quality
of life and to be able to walk and be happy. We could not have met a
nicer lady wanting to help this dog!
