Your pet should be wearing visible ID at all times and have a microchip.
Found a Pet?
If the owner does not come do not place a free to good home ad. People sell animals like this to labs and blood banks and they are used for fighting rings. Charge a fee of at least $25 and write down the adopters driver's license info. You can always wave the fee after you  check the people out. Don't feel weird following up later. Tell them you will. If the owner does come ask for family photos with the pet or vet records. Don't give away too much info in the ad. If you feel odd about taking reward money -suggest that they make a donation to a Local Rescue Organization.
Lost Your Pet?
1.
Check local shelters at least every 72 hours. The time limit to keep a stray is only 3 days. The longest would be 10 days for county. The faster you find them the better don't wait around.
2. Register your lost pet with the shelters and rescue groups- provide as much information as necessary - even a color flyer to post on the wall. Renew report each week. Don't expect them to be able to find your dog for you.
3. Place a LOST advertisement in the Daily Press, Penney Saver or other local publications incase your dog is being taken care of and not in the shelter. Place the ad for 1 month, then cancel when your dog is found. Most people watch for the owner to place the LOST ad and not place a found ad (for the safety of the animal)
4. Place lost flyers at the pet stores in your area and in your neighborhood and grocery stores.
5. Do not give up - it may take 30 or more days for your pet to be picked up or dropped off at a shelter. The more you show interest at a shelter the more they know people really care about their pets.
Please be aware that dogs without identification, microchip, or Rabies tag in this area only receive 72 hours for the animal's owner to locate them. Then the dog is euthanized or placed up for public adoption, if not adopted they are euthanized. SO PLEASE look for your pet as though it was a child -he/she needs your help.
6. Find out if your shelter has a shelter walker or someone who takes pictures. Tell them about your pet and provide a photo. Check your shelter's web page until your pet is found. Only a fraction of the pets are photographed -but you could get lucky.

Where oh where has my owner gone? Where oh where could he be? He hasn’t bothered to look for me so now I’ll be put to sleep. Please, LOOK for your pet, he needs you. Don't assume someone has taken him in and provided a loving home. Even if they are adopted you have no idea what type of home they are in and how they are being treated!
